About Go Big City

Last updated October 12, 2026.

Go Big City is a free, independent guide to moving to America’s biggest cities. Each city guide explains the specific, practical things you need to know before you move: how the transit system works, how renting works there, what winter or summer is really like, what you’ll pay, and which neighborhoods might suit you.

Why does Go Big City exist?

Moving to a big city is one of the biggest decisions people make, and most of what matters is local knowledge that isn’t written down in one place. People usually learn it the hard way after they arrive. Go Big City collects that knowledge city by city, so you can learn it before you move.

Who is it for?

Anyone moving to a big city, from another state, another country or the suburbs. If it’s your first big-city move, the guides are written with you in mind: local terms are explained, and nothing is assumed. Some articles are written specifically for recent college grads and are labeled that way.

Which cities do you cover?

Chicago is first, followed by New York and Dallas, then Atlanta, Austin, Denver, Houston, Miami and Nashville. Each guide covers the whole metro area, not just the city limits, because many people who move “to” a big city end up in a nearby suburb.

How are the guides written?

Every article answers one question, starting with a direct answer and then going as deep as the topic needs. Numbers that change, like rent, fares and tax rates, link to their original source and show when we last checked them. Read more on how we research and update the guides.

Do businesses pay to be included?

No. The guides are free to read, there’s no sign-up, and no building, landlord or business pays to be mentioned or ranked.
